THE STRUCTURE OF THE TAROT DECK

There are 78 cards in a Tarot Deck divinded into the Major Arcana and the Minor Arcana. The word Arcana comes from the Latin word arcanus meaning closed or secret. The Major Arcana in Tarot Deck is made of 22 cards.  Each card of the  Major Arcana or trump suit  has a different picture which illustrates an action, behaviour and/or an event. Each card also has a label which is a name, a title or a description of the picture on the card. The Major Arcana represents states of being - your mental, emotional and/or spiritual condition at the time of the reading or in terms of the situation being described.  These qualities are represented by characters such as THE EMPEROR, THE FOOL OR THE HIGH PRIESTESS, by several cosmic forces such as the the SUN and the MOON and by structures such as the TOWER, the WHEEL OF FORTUNE and the CHARIOT. The other cards are the the MAGICIAN, the EMPRESS, the HIEROPHANT, the LOVERS, STRENGTH, the HERMIT, JUSTICE, the HANGED MAN, DEATH, TEMPERANCE, the DEVIL, the STAR, JUDGEMENT and the WORLD.
Major Arcana cards in a layout refer to an important issue that needs attention in the life of the person concerned; the issue may still be unconscious, but is one that demands attention.

The remaining fifty six cards in the deck are called the Minor Arcana. These are divided into four suits - Swords, Cups, Coins or Pentacles and Wands. There are fourteen cards in each suit : ten from Ace to Ten and four court cards - the Page, Knight, Queen and King.

In the reading, the Minor Arcana describes events or situations and each suit focuses on a different area of your life. In general, Swords describe your mental or intellectual state, and Cups your emotional life. Pentacles correspond to your physical or material status and Wands to career, abilities or potentials. The court cards that Knights, Queens, Kings and Page represent actual  people in your life.
