LETS START FROM THE VERY BEGINNING......

There are different tarot decks available in the market but the Raider-Waite deck according me is the best one symbolically and easy to understand. As i have mentioned earlier the Major Arcana consists of 22 cards.  From Nos. 0 to 21. In a spread, the card comes in either the straight position or in the Reverse position. I give below very easy explanations of  each card of the Major Arcana. Here goes:

THE FOOL

The Fool has no number. It is sometimes placed at the beginning of the Major Arcana or at the end.

Ruling Planet : Uranus

Straight Position In a Tarot Spread this card represents choice and receptivity. You will be offered a new opportunity or a new beginning. The Fool is embracing the adventure of life. So too will you. You are open to new suggestions and ideas and are not afraid of the unknown. It also symbolises the beginning of a new relationship. The Fool takes calculated risks.

Reverse position :  Carelessness, Negligence, Apathy, Hesitation and Instability
You have not given enough thought to the choices you are about to make and can very well made a wrong decision. You are a careless person, a gambler in life. You are impulsively setting off into the unknown without listening to anyone. This card is a warning to look before you leap.

MORE ABOUT THE MINOR ARCANA CARDS

The function of the Minor Arcana is to describe the everyday world or life of the person. There is no mystical meaning about them It provides a background to the individual's struggle to come to terms with his or her inner reality. It is the Minor Arcana which reveals and describes just what the larger world is up to at any given time and exactly how that will affect you.  The lessons of the Minor Arcana therefore are no less important than those of the Major Arcana. It teaches that no event happens in a vacuum, everything follows from something else.

The four suits of the Minor Arcana that is the cups, swords, wands and pentacles also correspond to the four elements:

WANDS represent the FIRE ELEMENT

CUPS represent the WATER ELEMENT

SWORDS represent the AIR ELEMENT

PENTACLES OR COINS represent the EARTH ELEMENT

WANDS are associated with growth, energy, personal enterprise and with new ideas and creativity.

CUPS symbolise  love, happiness and the emotion. Cups refer to the subsonscious mind and natural instincts  rather than to intellect or reason.

SWORDS represent aggression, force, ambition, struggle. In the world of action, there can be both positive and negative dynamics and these differing dynamics emerge in the different cards of the Minor Arcana.

PENTACLES are associated with property and financial interests. They are also shown as coins. They represent the fruits of labour in everyday life.

In the Minor Arcana, there are sixteen Court Cards in the Tarot Pack in each suit: King. Queen, Knights and Page. While reviewing a Tarot spread, we can make the following associations:

King is associated with Power;   Queens with Support and Creativity;  Knights with New Projects, Goal Orientation and  Page with New Information

Within each suit, the relationships of the cards are similar; they describe events or situations. These events progress in a logical and coherent order. The court cards sometimes describe situations as well. But they can also describe specific people who will influence the outcome of a series of events.

THE STRUCTURE OF THE TAROT DECK

There are 78 cards in a Tarot Deck divinded into the Major Arcana and the Minor Arcana. The word Arcana comes from the Latin word arcanus meaning closed or secret. The Major Arcana in Tarot Deck is made of 22 cards.  Each card of the  Major Arcana or trump suit  has a different picture which illustrates an action, behaviour and/or an event. Each card also has a label which is a name, a title or a description of the picture on the card. The Major Arcana represents states of being - your mental, emotional and/or spiritual condition at the time of the reading or in terms of the situation being described.  These qualities are represented by characters such as THE EMPEROR, THE FOOL OR THE HIGH PRIESTESS, by several cosmic forces such as the the SUN and the MOON and by structures such as the TOWER, the WHEEL OF FORTUNE and the CHARIOT. The other cards are the the MAGICIAN, the EMPRESS, the HIEROPHANT, the LOVERS, STRENGTH, the HERMIT, JUSTICE, the HANGED MAN, DEATH, TEMPERANCE, the DEVIL, the STAR, JUDGEMENT and the WORLD.
Major Arcana cards in a layout refer to an important issue that needs attention in the life of the person concerned; the issue may still be unconscious, but is one that demands attention.

The remaining fifty six cards in the deck are called the Minor Arcana. These are divided into four suits - Swords, Cups, Coins or Pentacles and Wands. There are fourteen cards in each suit : ten from Ace to Ten and four court cards - the Page, Knight, Queen and King.

In the reading, the Minor Arcana describes events or situations and each suit focuses on a different area of your life. In general, Swords describe your mental or intellectual state, and Cups your emotional life. Pentacles correspond to your physical or material status and Wands to career, abilities or potentials. The court cards that Knights, Queens, Kings and Page represent actual  people in your life.

THE TAROT CARD READER AND THE READING

THE RESPONSIBLE TAROT CARD READER

1. It is vital that you retain your own sense of professional and spiritual integrity.

2. You need to adopt a strong ethical code of practice.

3. You could consciously seek some form of higher spiritual guidance - either through prayer or through positive affirmations so that you do not misguide the client through your interpretation of the spread.

4. speak with your client in a manner that he or she can relate to.

5. Communicate honestly what the cards seem to be saying even when there is a negative feel to the energy of the spread without making the seeker feel there is no solution.

6. Explain to the client that Tarot cards indicate likely outcomes rather than fixed events and there is a possibility that events and course of action can be modified.  There are always other options available.

7. If the client is dependent on the direction of your reading, a capacity for clear and effective communication coupled with a genuine sense of optimism will be important.

FEAR AND PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY

Some people consult Tarot Card Readers because they want to avoid taking responsibility for their own decisions. Even though the answers to their personal problems will eventually emerge through their own shuffling of the cards the through the interpretation of the reading, the client still believes that the Tarot card reader alone has the all the answers.  Such people will expect specific answers to their questions and will expect the future outlined in the cards to manifest itself in very concrete terms. They will blame the Tarot Reader if things do not turn out exactly as expected! This is due to their own fear and self doubt and they also are side-stepping the important issue of taking responsibility for their own actions.  This allows them to take the role of the victim of fate. The Tarot Reader has to explain to the client that we all have to assume responsibility for our own thoughts and actions.
This is the Universal Law of Karma - the law of cause and effect and it applies to everything - even to Tarot.

READING FOR ABSENT FRIENDS

You can lay out the cards and ask a question pertaining to someone who isn't present. This can be good fun or fraught with projection.  Again reading on behalf of someone else or about a mundane situation requires complete emotional honesty. Personally, its amusing to ask questions like "what is my lover thinking about me    right now?" . Steer away from issues and questions which are really no one's business.

GOING DEEPER

Once you are more familiar with the tarot cards, you start to widen your knowledge by combining other divination techniques to add extra elements to your readings. The tarot has close associations with Numerology, Astrology, Kabbalah.  You can introduce any of these extra skills to your readings at any time. Meditation is also a great way to learn about the tarot and it allows you to enter the world of tarot rather than  rather than make you feel that you are watcher standing outside it and observing a life that is not your own.

Creating your own spreads is also very important in developing your skills as a reader. You increase your skills and set questions and interpretations that come from the heart rather than merely out of a textbook.
