THE FOUR ELEMENTS
The division of the world of creation into four elements - Fire, Water, Earth and Air is a metaphysical idea. It is useful to consider the traditional attributes and qualities ascribed to each of the elements, for the elements relate to the Tarot cards, and knowing their attributes can assist us with interpreting the Tarot.
The four elements are linked to the four Tarot suits as follows:
Fire Wands
Water Cups
Air Swords
Earth Pentacles
Wands are associated with groth, energy, personal enterprise, new ideas and creativity.
Cups symbolise love, happiness, emotions, linked to fertility and beauty. Cups refer to the subconscious mind rather than the intellectual.
Swords represent aggression, ambition, struggle and animosity.
Pentacles are associated with property, finance and the fruits of labour
